A collaborative effort involving four UK universities is attempting to provide academic researchers with cloud-based compute, storage, and bioinformatics algorithms and pipelines for analysing and making sense of microbial genomes. A total of £8.4m (over five years has been provided for the projectThe MRC Cloud Infrastructure for Microbial Bioinformatics (CLIMB) involves researchers at Swansea University, the University of Warwick, University of Birmingham, and Cardiff University. It's composed of four components: the planned cloud system itself, updated bioinformatics facilities at Warwick and Swansea Universities, planned training workshops and events, and three microbial bioinformatics research fellows, who are developing and implementing pipelines on the system that support various analysis needs.

As part of the 2015 Budget Tour of Wales, Finance and Government Business Minister – Jane Hutt – announced £4.5 million of EU funds will be used to develop a centre for brain research at Cardiff University. The funding will support the construction works of the new Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC). The building will allow scientists to gain an understanding of the causes of a range of health conditions, including dementia, schizophrenia and multiple sclerosis.

Swansea Trials Unit (STU), based at Swansea University, has received full accreditation as a trials unit from the UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC). 


Open consultations on role of the responsible officer in medical revalidation associates. The RO guidance has been produced in collaboration with the Scottish and Welsh governments and NHS England and is aimed at 3 key audiences:

  • doctors licensed with the General Medical Council (GMC) to practise medicine
  • responsible officers and those taking on the responsible officer role
  • organisations designated in the regulations
